Kume Japanese Steakhouse (Epping, NH)

The fun with The Chef's Plate continues. Kume Japanese Steakhouse was a delightful little restaurant with some great appeal. Great atmosphere and ambiance coupled with a delectable menu full of a wide array of Japanese dishes. Serving up it's own twists on sushi, hibachi and sake drinks it brings new flavors and style to traditional Japanese fare.

From the moment you walk in, Kume feels inviting. The textures and lighting of the restaurant creates a calm, relaxing atmosphere. There are ornate red lights in the dining area, blue lights that hang over the bar and some great glass lights surrounding the sushi bar that contain wheat sprigs.

On the hibachi side of the restaurant there are dark woods, leather backed chairs, granite table tops and beautiful orange napkins that serve as a backdrop for the hibachi chefs to work there magic. Families surround the hot stove while the chef tosses eggs, dices vegetables and otherwise entertains you with his knife and spatula skills.

The food was delicious, fresh and felt inspired. We sampled some sushi dishes, some hibachi and a few of their specialty drinks.

The Kume Style Tuna Salsa
One of their signature dishes, the Kume Style Tuna Salsa containing wild caught tuna, mango, avocado, jalapeno and covered in tobiko and a mustard miso sauce was good. The mango and avocado played really well together. The jalapeno gave it just enough of a kick to be noticeable without being overpowering and the tobiko gave it a bit of a crunch. It was fun to pull the dish apart with chopsticks, but I could easily see myself spooning this into my mouth on days that I was hungrier and less patient.

The Tuna Salsa was a delight, but the Tuna Tataki hit the spot with me. I'm a pretty big tuna fan to begin with. I enjoy the fresh taste of a good slice of tuna, so that's likely why I preferred the Tuna Tataki over the Tuna Salsa. The tataki, a plate of seared wild caught tuna in aji amarillo sauce was light and delicious. A perfect entry into the other sushi delights.

The Epping Roll
The sushi chefs also presented us with the Epping Roll. It was divine, containing tempura shrimp, spicy tuna and avocado and then topped with a healthy portion of spicy crab meat and sprinkled with tobiko. The flavors all mixed together were tremendously satisfying. The texture worked well together as well, with the smoothness of the tuna, avocado and crab meat playing really well with the crunch of the tempura shrimp and tobiko.

The Kume Filet Mignon
For entrees they served us a beautiful looking Filet Mignon dish. It was comprised of two slices of filet split by a fried potato and topped with a generous helping of potato curls and drizzled in a teriyaki sauce. The potato center was hashbrown-like and was delicious when cleaning up the plates sauce or sandwiched between filet pieces. Served on a bed of vegetables it was perfectly complimented with a tall Sapporo.

Kume also had an amazing hibachi side in the restaurant with very entertaining chefs who put on quite a show. The restaurant also offeres a full bar complete with numerous sake's and Japanese beers.
